War memorials to be in 'good repair' ahead of centenary - April 06, 2013
War memorials on the island must in "good repair" ahead of next year's centenary of the outbreak of WWI.
The Home affairs minister is calling for local churches and commissioners to undertake conservation work in advance.
Juan Watterson said while no grants will be offered from the Manx government, funding could be available from the War Memorial Trust in the UK.
He added: "I believe we owe it to those commemorated to make sure no memorial is neglected or forgotten."
There are about 150 memorials on the Isle of Man ranging from wall mounted plaques to large stone monuments.
